I will have 4 hours in Honolulu between flights. What can we do?
I will have 4 hours in Honolulu between flights. Is there anything within walking distance from the airport, or any free shuttles, since I obviously don't want to rent a car for 4 hours. There will be 9 of us. Any suggestions on how to get to any location without renting a car?

Bad news... The airport is nowhere near anything you would want to see. The only free shuttle would be within the airport. If you want to see anything at all, I think you are kind of stuck with a cab, which would be pricey. The last time I took a cab from downtown to the airport it was ~$50 & that was a couple of years ago. Waikiki would add another 10 or 20 to the tab.

With the security issues, you do not want to leave the airport b/c you would have to go through the TSA checkpoint again, and sometimes it is backed up. By the time you got anywhere (the airport is not near anything of note), you'd have to come back. There are stores inside the airport, which is mostly open-air. You can get T-shirts, Hawaiian calendars, postcards, etc. The prices aren't too bad. There are some OK restaurants, and bar-bistro type places--just relax and stretch out before another long flight! There's a very good local ice cream stand as well, called Lappert's. Very good.

I agree with Boomer Gal and Anna...A Taxi would cost you a small fortune plus depending on the time of day it would take you anywhere from 25-45 minutes to get anywhere really worth seeing and you just don't have that kind of time. Hang out at The Honolulu Airport..get a few souvenirs and have a Double-Shot Mai Tai...(they are really good )~~ Aloha..a hui ho~~

You can catch a bus. If it's 4 hours door to door (landing to take off), you are cutting it close. You could walk up to Nimitz highway. It takes about 20 minutes from the farthest terminal. For the Bus, take 19 to Ala Moana. http://www.thebus.org/Route/Timetables/Rt19.pdf You could spend about an hour max, then ride back with an hour to spare. If it is on a Saturday, Sunday or Wednesday, take 20 (Westbound for 15 minutes) to the Aloha Stadium Flea Market / Swap Meet. It's a 30-40 minute walk. http://www.thebus.org/Route/Timetables/Rt20.pdf http://www.alohastadiumswapmeet.net/ Nothing is free here, except for the ocean, air and sunshine.
