how long does a flight have to be to be considered an international flight

how long does a flight have to be to be considered an international flight?
i was told that because my trip to hawaii will be from chicago to honolulu nonstop. which is like 9 hours that was considered an international flight. is that true?

I never heard of such a thing. International would be if you leave the USA territory and last I heard Hawaii still is the USA.

No. An international flight is one that lands in a different country. However, if you are using reward miles, they often charge the same for a flight to Hawaii as they would for international.

It is only considered international if it goes out of the country...

It's not the length but where you go. Once you leave the physical US boundary at California, you will be in International Airspace. When you come close to Hawaii about 200 miles, you will again re-enter US airspace. If you went from Chicago to Toronto, this would also be considered an international flight since you have exited US airspace. Like I wrote, it's not the distance but, if you exit US airspace. Have a good trip to Honolulu and enjoy the sun.
