How to meet ID “identification proof “ at airline security line ?
A friend told me her sweet 78 year old grandmother from Hawaii traveled here for a wedding in DC yesterday using an expired driver’s license and a Sam’s Club ID as her ID for boarding a flight in Honolulu. However, her family thinks this may not be proof enough when she departs through Dulles to go back. I suggested calling the airline or TSA for advice on proper ID but does anyone know how she might get a picture ID in the one week she will be here beforeheading back, one that could be used for ID purposes at the airport ? Thanks

An expired driver's license should be OK in most situations. As a non-resident, she may have trouble getting an ID from a local state (Dicstrict) DMV. You can get an emergency rush passport in that time, but you would need proof that you're leaving the country. Last I checked, Hawaii is still in the union, so if you must pursue this route, buy a refundable ticket to Toronto, apply for the passport, then get a refund on the ticket.

An expired driver's license is not considered to be valid ID. That being said, though, a valid ID is not necessary to get through security -- the TSA will let a person through without valid ID so long as he or she goes through additional screening. Your friend's grandmother will not have a problem getting home without a valid ID.

They WILL let you through security with an expired drivers license or passport....I did it the other day. I dont even think they noticed.. sad isnt it?

if you don't have an ID to board the plane they will simply take you and do additional screening, including a handheld metal detector and a pat down. an expired ID will work. if they decide it's not good enough, they'll take you to the private screening area and do additional security
