WASHINGTON — Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel on Monday nominated Navy Adm. Harry B. Harris Jr. to be the next commander of U.S. Pacific Command, based in Honolulu. Harris is currently serving as commander of U.S. Pacific Fleet – the naval arm of PACOM.

Nathan Varner, of Moravia, crashed his motorcycle just before 3 a.m. Sept. 14 on the off-ramp of the highway in Honolulu, according to the Accident Data Center's website. Varner was transported to the hospital where he died from his injuries. He was 26.
