Why are there no morning flights from Honolulu to the continental USA?
I've been to Honolulu a couple of times with Northwest Airlines, and when my vacation is over, would like to leave the airport in the morning, but the only flights I can get returning to the continental USA from Honolulu are in the afternoon. I then arrive home the next day. Why are there only afternoon or later flights leaving Honolulu? I've checked NWA, United, etc. and none leave Honolulu in the morning.

In the morning the flight's are primarly international flights. But there are flights to the mainland U.S. at this time also. Also because of the time zone differences all across the U.S. it is hard to schedule a flight so it does not arrive somewhere at 3 in the morning. See examples below: Some AM Flights to U.S. Mainland From Honolulu as of 11/18/07 United Flight 934 to LAX @ 7:00 a.m. United Flight 72 to SFO @ 7:22 a.m. Hawaiian Flight 10 to LAX @ 8:10 a.m. American Flight 270 to LAX @ 8:30 a.m.

The problem you're having is likely a function of your destination. Most of the major carriers DO operate morning flights out of Honolulu to the mainland, but perhaps they don't have such departures for the city you're traveling to. Recently, I took an American Airlines flight out of Honolulu, and it was one of the first planes to leave the airport that morning. . . but I was flying to Dallas. Good luck, and Happy Travels! I agree 100%!!! I hate it, because I can't sleep. I've asked the airlines, and they all claim it has to do with scheduling the planes, but that's b.s., because the ones that arrive don't leave the same day, they leave the next (so the crews can sleep). I've emailed the airlines about it. I think if enough people like you and me keep emailing them and raising the question, they may start scheduling morning flights!

There are morning flights from Hawaii to the mainland U.S. My grandmother passed away last September. In order to go to her funeral, I was on a 6:30 am flight from Lihue to Honolulu and an 8:00 am flight from Honolulu to Los Angeles. That was on Hawaiian Airlines. Maybe you are just not looking at all of your options. BTW, everyone has his or her own preferences, but why not just wait until the evening to fly home? You get an extra day in Hawaii that way -- and who wouldn't want that? -- and you can sleep on the plane going home!

Have you tried Kayak.com? They have a wide array of airlines and times to choose from. I don't ever recall flying out to the U.S. mainland in the morning, but I have flown out in the earlier part of the afternoon?
