Which is better, American Airlines or UA? (LAX to Honolulu, about a 7-hour flight)?
It's because both airlines are $466 now to HNL. I've had bad trips on UA--getting only peanuts on a 4-hour flight. Is American any better? Which one should I go for?

I flew Delta last year...and all I got was pretzels unless I wanted to BUY a sack dinner from them. I think all domestic flights are now charging for meals.

All you are going to get on most flights are a small snack. But they have changed in the last few years to offer something better on longer flights. Delta now offers a complimentary meal service in coach for flights over 5 hrs to and from Alaska and Hawaii. Both AA and UA have food for purchase and the selections of what is available is below. On most domestic carriers all you will get is a small snack. Delta has a wide variety of what they offer now on flights over an hour and a half. Always bring your own food on the plane. During cost cutting measure's airlines cut back on the snacks to shave off the bottom line. But after many customer complaints they offered food for purchase just to bring food options on board. They arent the greatest, but its available should you not bring your own. The days of silver spoon flying is gone. Before the internet came out and especially before deregulation, airlines could afford to accomidate their passengers. But when the average ticket is selling for $200-$300 round trip, they are not making much money. On top of rising fuel costs and greedy executives they have to cut corners somehow and food was one of them.

I've flown both American and United to and from Honolulu. I personally preferred United because the time I flew with them they played a game about guessing at what time we'd be exactly halfway from LAX to Honolulu. I didn't win; but it was fun. By the way, LAX to HNL is about 5 1/2 hours and HNL to LAX is a little under 5 hours. Trust me on this one I've been back and forth a whole bunch of times.

As someone who was raised in (northern) California and has been traveling 2-5 times a year between Honolulu and the mainland since 2000, I must say that Hawaiian Airlines really is the best choice when traveling to Hawaii. However, if forced to choose between the UA & American, I'd go for American.

I have been to Hawaii three times (from NYC). I prefer American Airlines which has the best air miles program, and is the only major airline not in bankruptcy. United Airlines makes it extremely difficult to use air miles, probably because they need to emerge from bankruptcy protection soon. You should pack a sandwich, a snack and 2 bottles of water, since you are flying economy. (I'm packing food for my upcoming flight from NYC to LAX in late August!)

continental is better because they dont stop anywhere they just go nonstop

Well, here's one review I found: SFO-HNL-SFO. Uneventful, on-time, exit row seating so plenty of space. The crews were okay and the entire experience was within expectations. A trip to the local Whole Foods store made my catering exceptional. Had a good book so the time was well spent. However, when I contrast this with my first flight to Hawaii in 1967 with all the hoopla of a lei welcome, etc., it made me a bit nostalgic for those times. But, the fact that the world has changed is not American's fault and they did a respectable job. (I know that's not LAX-HNL, but that route may be similar)

Did you try and look at these www.hawaiianair.com www.ata.com If I'm not mistaking those airlines fly direct from LAX to HNL. But you should check on those. Besides its always best to bring your own food when flying on planes, most of the time thats all you would get is peanuts. Good Luck tho and Have Fun

Hawaiian air is the best, they do serve you amean as does Delta.... the other do not. But 466.00 including taxes dueing the summer was excellent! go for it! Your only in the air for 5 hours
